ভারতে এসে বিদেশি পর্যটকদের ‘স্কার্ট না পরার’ ও ‘রাতে একলা ঘোরাঘুরি না করার’ পরামর্শ দিয়ে প্রবল বিতর্ক তৈরি করেছেন দেশের পর্যটন ও সংস্কৃতি মন্ত্রী মহেশ শর্মা।
পরে তিনি নিজের বক্তব্যের সমর্থনে সাফাই দিলেও সে বিতর্ক থামেনি।
আগ্রার মতো জনপ্রিয় পর্যটনস্থলগুলোতে বিদেশিদের নিরাপত্তা ও সুরক্ষা নিশ্চিত করার জন্য সরকার কী করছে, রবিবার এমন এক প্রশ্নের জবাবে ভারতের পর্যটন মন্ত্রী ওই বিতর্কিত মন্তব্য করেন।
মহেশ শর্মা তখন বলেছিলেন, “এয়ারপোর্টে যখন বিদেশি পর্যটকরা নামবেন তখন তাদের হাতে কী করা উচিত ও কী করা উচিত নয়-এর একটি তালিকা ধরিয়ে দেওয়া হবে। সেখানেই বলা থাকবে, কোনও ছোট জায়গায় যখন তারা যাবেন তখন যেন রাতে একলা না বোরোন কিংবা স্কার্টের মতো পোশাক না-পরেন!’’
ভারতকে একটি সংস্কৃতিসম্পন্ন দেশ হিসেবে বর্ণনা করে তিনি আরও বলেন “আমাদের দেশের মন্দিরগুলোতে একটা পোশাকবিধি আছে, সেখানে যাওয়ার সময় সেটা মাথায় রাখলে ভাল"।
তবে মন্ত্রী অবশ্য তখনই স্পষ্ট করে দিয়েছিলেন, কে কী পোশাক পরবেন বা পরবেন না এমন কোনও ড্রেস কোড বা পোশাকবিধি চালু করার ইচ্ছে সরকারের নেই।
কিন্তু তা সত্ত্বেও মন্ত্রীর স্কার্ট না-পরার পরামর্শ নিয়ে এরপরই তুমুল হইচই শুরু হয়ে যায়, সোশ্যাল মিডিয়াতে অনেকেই মন্ত্রী মহেশ শর্মাকে কটাক্ষ করে মন্তব্য করতে শুরু করেন।
কেন্দ্রীয় সরকারের কড়া সমালোচক বলে পরিচিত দিল্লির মুখ্যমন্ত্রী অরবিন্দ কেজরিওয়াল টুইট করেন, “বৈদিক যুগেও ভারতের নারীদের যে পোশাক পরা না-পরার স্বাধীনতা ছিল, মোদির যুগে সেটুকুও আর নেই!’’
তার মন্তব্য প্রবল বিতর্ক তৈরি করেছে, এটা বুঝেই এদিন সকালে নিজের বক্তব্যের ব্যাখ্যা দিতে এগিয়ে আসেন মহেশ শর্মা।
তিনি দাবি করেন, পর্যটকদের সুরক্ষা নিয়ে ‘উদ্বেগে’র কারণেই তিনি স্কার্ট না-পরার কথা বলেছিলেন।

তিনি আরও বলেন, “আমাদের সংস্কৃতি হল অতিথিদেবো ভব, অতিথিদের আমরা দেবতার মতো দেখি। ফলে আমরা এমন কোনও নিষেধাজ্ঞা আরোপ করার কথা ভাবতেই পারি না, কিন্তু সাবধান হওয়ার মধ্যে দোষের কিছু নেই"।
